Will you be ready when the next disaster strikes? Natural disasters can happen at anytime. The area you live in might be prone to earthquakes, floods, blizzards, tornados, fires, or other emergencies. There are some things you will need to prepare for any disaster.
Put together a disaster kit. You will need one gallon of clean water for each person in your family. Get enough to last at least three days. Gather food that is non-perishable. You will need enough to last each person for three or more days. A battery-powered radio can help you to hear the latest news about what is going on. Bring extra batteries in case those run out, and some for the flashlights you will need as well. Moist towlettes are useful for personal sanitation in case there is not clean water available. Grab your cell phone and the charger that goes along with it.
You will need a first aid kit. This should include at least two pairs of sterile latex (or non-latex) gloves. There should be plenty of clean bandages as well as adhesive band-aids, to stop bleeding and to keep cuts clean. Antibiotic ointments and towlettes should be in the first aid kit as well. You may want to include a burn ointment and eyewash, just in case that may be needed. Medication should also be in the first aid kit. You will need an aspirin, or non-aspirin pain reliever. Antacids and anti-diarrhea medications are wise to include. If you or any member of your family requires prescription medication be sure to put some of it into your first aid kit. Check your first aid kit once a month to make sure all the pieces are still in there, and to make sure none of the medication has expired.
There is potential that you may end up living outside for a while after a disaster has occurred. Bring a change of clothing for each family member. Sleeping bags are a good idea. Plastic tarps are useful for rain and wind protection, and to ensure a clean and dry place to sit. Babies in your family will require extra diapers and formula. Woman may want to bring extra feminine products. Everyone in the family will need deodorant, combs, toothbrushes, and other personal hygiene products. Make sure your family has a specific place to meet, and assign each person a particular supply to grab.
